And it came to pass in that time that Ioudas went down from his brothers, and arrived unto before a certain human of [the] Odollamites, whose name [was] Eiras.

And Ioudas saw there [the] daughter of [this] human of [the] Chananaion, whose name [was] Sava. And he took her, and entered towards her.

And she conceived [and] bore a son. And she called his name: Er.

And she conceived [and] bore a son more. And she called his name: Aunan.

And adding she bore a son. And she called his name: Selom. And she was in Chasbi when she bore them.

And Ioudas took a wife [for] Er, his first-born, whose name [was] Thamar.

And it came to pass [that] Er, [the] first-born of Ioudas, [was] wicked before [the] lord. And the Theos killed him.

And Ioudas said to Aunan: "Enter towards the wife of your brother, and marry her as the next of kin, and raise up seed to your brother."

And Aunan, knowing that the seed will not be his, [that] it came to pass whenever he entered towards his brother's wife, that he poured upon the ground, to not give seed to his brother.

And it appeared wicked before the Theos, that he did this, and he put to death also this one.

And Ioudas said to his daughter-in-law Thamar: "You sit as a widow in the house of your father, until my son Selom becomes big." For he said: "Lest at any time also this [one] should also die as his brothers." And Thamar going forth, sat in the house of her father.

And the days increased, and Sava, the wife of Ioudas, died. And being comforted, Ioudas ascended to the shearing of his sheep, himself and Eiras, his shepherd, the Odollamites, into Thamna.

And it was reported to his daughter-in-law Thamar, saying: "Behold: your father-in-law ascends to Thamna, to shear his sheep."

And removing the garments of the widowhood from herself, she put around a lightweight covering, and bedecked [herself], and sat by the gates of Ainan, which is in [the] passage to Thamna, for she saw that Selom was big, but he did not give her to him as wife.

And Ioudas seeing her, assumed her to be a harlot, for she covered her face. And he recognized her not.

And he turned aside towards her [beside] the way. And he said to her: "Allow me to enter towards you", for did he did not know that she is his daughter-in-law. And she said: "What will you give to me if you should enter towards me?"

And he said: "I will send to you a kid of goats from out of my flock." And she said: "You should give an earnest, until you send [it]."

And he said: "What earnest shall I give to you?" And she said: "Your ring, and your pendant, and the rod in your hand." And he gave [this] to her, and entered towards her. And in [the] belly, she conceived from him.

And rising up, she went forth. And she removed her lightweight covering from herself, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

And Ioudas sent the kid of goats in [the] hand of his shepherd, the Odollamite, to recover the earnest from the woman. And he did not find her.

And he asked the men of the place: "Where is the harlot, the [one] being in Ainan upon the way?" And they said: "There was no harlot here."

And he returned to Ioudas, and said: "I did not find her. And the men, the ones from the place, say: 'There was no harlot here.' "

And Ioudas said: "Let her have them. But lest at any time we should be ridiculed: I indeed sent this kid, but you have not found her."

And it came to pass after three months, [that] it was announced to Ioudas, saying: "Your daughter-in-law Thamar fornicated. And behold: she has in [the] belly from out of fornication." And Ioudas said: "Lead her out, and let her be incinerated."

And [while] leading her, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: "From the human whom these [items] are I have in [the] belly." And she said: "Recognize whose ring and pendant and rod these [are]."

And Ioudas knew [this], and said: "Thamar has done justice rather than I, because I did not give my son Selom. And he did not add to know her more."

And it came to pass when she was bringing forth, that these were twins in her belly.

And it came to pass in her bringing forth, [that] one put forth the hand. And taking [it], the midwife tied upon his hand a scarlet, saying: "This [one] will come out first."

And as he retracted the hand, straightway came forth his brother. And she said: "Why was the fence cut because of you?" And she called his name: Phares.

And after this came forth his brother, with whom was upon his hand the scarlet [thread]. And she called his name: Zara.
