Roger Bacon was one of the earliest European advocates of the scientific method. A Franciscan friar, he emphasized empirical observation and experimental science over reliance on authority. He wrote on optics, alchemy, and mathematics. He predicted inventions such as flying machines, motorized ships, and microscopes. His major work, Opus Majus, covered grammar, logic, mathematics, physics, and philosophy.
