Kristian Birkeland was a Norwegian physicist who was one of the founders of Plasma Cosmology. He correctly explained the aurora borealis as caused by electrically charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth's magnetic field. He proposed that electric currents flow through space, now called "Birkeland currents." He also invented the electromagnetic cannon and worked on nitrogen fixation.
