Johannes Kepler was a German mathematician and astronomer who discovered the elliptic nature of planetary motion. His three laws of planetary motion laid the foundation for Newton's theory of universal gravitation. He worked with Tycho Brahe and used his precise observational data to develop his theories. He also made significant contributions to optics and is considered a founder of modern astronomy.
