Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a German poet and polymath, author of the famous play Faust. Considered the greatest German literary figure, he also made significant contributions to science, particularly in morphology, optics, and color theory. His Theory of Colours challenged Newton's views. His literary works include The Sorrows of Young Werther and Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship.
